At the announcement, Mochrie, best-known for his work on CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Whose Line Is It Anyway?, seemed genuinely flummoxed and noted performer Hamilton’s influence on the cultural landscape.
The George Luscombe Award for theatre mentorship went to movement/clowning artists Martha Ross and Leah Cherniak. The pair was given a rousing, emotional tribute by actor Maggie Huculak. Ross said receiving the award was “a great honour,” and Cherniak related the award to a sense of community-building and exchange between art forms.
TheatreBooks owners Leonard McHardy and John Harvey handed out their award namesake, for excellence in artistic administration, to Nightswimming producer Naomi Campbell.
The nominations were announced at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre in the Four Seasons Centre by the four leads of the musical Jersey Boys, itself nominated for seven awards.
The Doras take place June 29th at the Winter Garden Theatre. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the awards, a special book by Dora producer and Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts Executive Director Jacoba Knaapen will be given to attendees at this year’s ceremony.
