Dora Nominations Announced for Best in Toronto Theatre
Nominations for the thirtieth annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards were announced Wednesday morning in Toronto.

Leading the nominees is Crow’s Theatre Company, with a combined total of fifteen nods, for their productions of I, Claudia, up for five awards, and Eternal Hydra, with ten nominations. Coming in second is the fu-GEN Asian-Canadian Theatre Company production of lady in the red dress (eight nominations) done in association with the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. ColinMochrie

Other nominated shows include Buddies in Bad Times’ Agokwe (eight nominations), Peggy Baker Dancer Projects’ Radio Play (four), and Soulpepper’s production of A Raisin in the Sun (six).

Actor/comedian Colin Mochrie received the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award from Toronto City Councillor Kyle Rae. The award recognizes ambassadors in the arts. At the announcement, Mochrie, best-known for his work on CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Whose Line Is It Anyway?, seemed genuinely flummoxed and noted performer Hamilton’s influence on the cultural landscape.

The George Luscombe Award for theatre mentorship went to movement/clowning artists Martha Ross and Leah Cherniak. The pair was given a rousing, emotional tribute by actor Maggie Huculak. Ross said receiving the award was “a great honour,” and Cherniak related the award to a sense of community-building and exchange between art forms.

TheatreBooks owners Leonard McHardy and John Harvey handed out their award namesake, for excellence in artistic administration, to Nightswimming producer Naomi Campbell.

The nominations were announced at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre in the Four Seasons Centre by the four leads of the musical Jersey Boys, itself nominated for seven awards.

The Doras take place June 29th at the Winter Garden Theatre. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the awards, a special book by Dora producer and Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts Executive Director Jacoba Knaapen will be given to attendees at this year’s ceremony. CBC Radio’s Jian Ghomeshi will host the proceedings.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
